UNIDO and UNESCO-UNEVOC Promote Green Skills Development at Greenovet Conference

Experts from UNIDO and UNESCO-UNEVOC talked about the internationalization of Vocational Education and Training (VET) and green skills development around the world at the Greenovet Conference.

Graz, June 10, 2024 – The “Vocational Excellence for a Green Europe” Conference, a cornerstone event of the Greenovet Project for professionals working on shaping a sustainable future, took place on 5-6 June 2024. The conference focused on the pivotal role of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in fostering green innovation and sustainable practices. As part of the technical sessions, Friedrich Huebler from UNESCO-UNEVOC, Mattias Larsen from UNIDO, Andriy Moskalenko from the Lviv City Council and other experts, discussed the internationalization of Vocational Education and Training (VET). Green skills development around the world was further explored by Karin Monaco from UNIDO and Kenneth Barrientos from UNESCO-UNEVOC, along with Susanne Nielsen from the European Training Foundation (ETF), as they delved into the role of UN and EU specialized agencies in guiding the actors from the skills ecosystem toward sustainable and circular practices.

Mattias Larsen from UNIDO outlined the efforts of UNIDO’s Skills Development and Fair Production Unit in the VET sector, stating: “By leveraging partnerships with the private sector, we enhance skill-sets and promote concepts and norms to attract youth and women to fair and green industrial jobs. We also guide states in skill development to meet market needs in sustainable value chains.”

UNESCO-UNEVOC highlighted its work in supporting their Member States in strengthening and upgrading their TVET systems through capacity development programmes, collaborative projects, and the global UNEVOC Network. The centre promotes quality TVET that is accessible to all, focusing on skills for work and life, digital transformation, private sector engagement, and greening TVET. The TVET Leadership Programme, a key initiative designed to equip TVET leaders with the strategic vision, thematic knowledge, and management skills needed to drive change in their institutions and beyond, was also showcased.

UNIDO introduced the Learning and Knowledge Development Facility (LKDF) as the institutional platform at UNIDO promoting skills development and working to bridge the skills gap. A prime example of UNIDO’s LKDF work in green skills development is the “Toolkit for Resilient TVET for the Green Transition”, developed in partnership with UNESCO-UNEVOC and recently applied in UNIDO’s Green Recovery Programme for Ukraine. The toolkit equips individuals and institutions with resources to acquire essential skills on topics such as organizational resilience and green and entrepreneurial learning. TVET managers and administrators also benefit from the financial sustainability tool, designed to assist them in managing their finances effectively. Through these efforts, the LKDF and UNESCO-UNEVOC are paving the way for a sustainable and green transition.
