Launch of the ZAMITA Training Programme

The ZAMITA (Zambian Industrial Training Academy) Programme, Zambia’s first diploma programme in Heavy Equipment Engineering was officially opened on the 7th of November at Northern Technical College, NORTEC, in Ndola. The programme has come about as a Public Private Development Partnership (PPDP), where the Embassy of Sweden and Volvo have made a joint investment (on a 50/50 basis) and entrusted UNIDO with the implementation.

The mining industry needs skilled workers and young Zambians need employment. With this initiative, the mining industry will get the skilled work force it needs and the graduated students will get a qualified job.

Except for monetary resources and equipment, companies contribute with Technical know-how and expertise. Volvo and other industry companies know what they need from a mine worker and in the ZAMITA programme they have been part of the curricula development and are providing training to teachers and students. The Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority was part of the curricula Development and also approved it in July this year.

The ZAMITA programme is just the beginning. The curricula is in place and can be replicated in other Technical schools. That will give more Young People qualified training and Jobs, the industry a skilled work force and Zambia more development.
